How Spray Foam Insulation Works

Spray foam insulation is a two-in-one product that insulates and air seals in one step.

The installation of spray foam insulation is different than fiberglass or cellulose insulation. Spray foam insulation is applied in a liquid form that quickly expands to completely fill the space between cavities. This coverage prevents air leaks to keep conditioned air inside your home or office and helps keep energy bills low. Foam insulation is durable, stable and long-lasting. It can be applied in attics, exterior walls of new homes, and basement box sills. Spray foam insulation can also increase the strength of your home by helping to increase stability during high winds and storms.

Types of Spray Foam Insulation

Whitson Insulation Company installs two types of spray foam insulation: open cell and closed cell spray foam.

Open Cell Spray Foam

Open cell spray foam insulation works as an insulator and air barrier. Open cell spray foam typically has an R‑value of 3.7 per inch. Open cell spray foam insulation is vapor permeable and dampens sound.

Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed cell insulation also works as an insulator and air barrier. Since the cells of the bubbles remain intact (closed), closed cell insulation foam is more rigid than open cell spray foam. The closed cell composition and increased density contribute to a higher R‑value (approximately 7 per inch) than that of open cell expandable foam. This can contribute to greater stability during storms and high winds.
